Updated Class Schedule – Aug 17, 2020

After testing safety with our limited class schedule the last couple of months, we feel it is safe enough for us to open up more classes throughout the week to help better serve those could not make classes due to their schedule. We will continue to enforce CDC guidelines in class which include wearing masks and physical distancing. To see our schedule page, click here

Christmas and New Years Holiday Hours

O-Mei Wushu USA will be closed for the Christmas and New Years holiday season

Please note that the school will be closed from Monday, December 24, 2018 to January 1, 2019 for Christmas and New Years.

Christmas in China

Merry Christmas in Chinese is 圣诞快乐 (pronouned Sheng Dan Kuai Le) and is a western holiday that is celebrated more and more especially in the big cities in China. However, like many western holidays in China, it is more of a commercial holiday where young couples give each other gifts, much like Valentine’s Day. Decorating one’s home for Christmas is very rare though many shopping malls show quite of bit of Christmas spirit.

A unique tradition that is becoming quite popular is giving apples on Christmas Eve. This is because the Chinese word for apple is 苹果 (pronounced ping guo) which sounds very similar to the chinese word for peace, 平安 (pronounced ping an).

New Years (January 1st) In China

Since the Chinese place great importance on the lunar calendar, January 1st, while a public holiday, is not particularly important to the Chinese. Most celebrate it by attending corporate parties. At midnight, there is a fireworks show over the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule

In observance of Thanksgiving, there will be no classes this Thursday and Friday, November 22nd and 23rd. Classes will resume Saturday, November 24th.

We are thankful for each and every one of our students. You all bring an willingness to learn and a spirit of self improvement that enriches each other as well as inspires us. Enjoy this holiday and we will see you afterwards to help you work off that Thanksgiving feast!

Like Halloween a month ago, Thanksgiving is another holiday that isn’t widely celebrated in China. However, unlike Halloween, there isn’t a similar holiday that takes place around the same time. In China, it is usually the American expats that celebrate Thanksgiving. For the Chinese that pick up on this holiday, they think of it as a time to have a Western meal and thank friends, family, coworkers, teachers, or bosses.

No Classes on Halloween

O-Mei Wushu USA will be closed this Wednesday, October 31st for Halloween. That means more time for trick or treating!

Halloween was introduced to China through western teachers, but is generally not celebrated like it is here in the United States. Like most cultures however, the Chinese traditional have several days of the dead. The closest one to our Halloween is the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Legend has it that on the first day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar, the gates of hell are opened and the ghosts of the ancestors roam around looking for entertainment. To appease the spirits, people set out food for the ghosts to eat and burn fake paper money for the ghosts to spend. On the last day of the 7th month, the gates of hell are closed and is celebrated in many ways depending on the region and local culture.
